WEEK 1

Gold Flower

August 18, 2001

Well, it's time to get back to classes and for this session I've enrolled in the Meta Tags Magic class. This is very exciting for me in that this class is designed to teach me how to make my sites more accessible on the web. It will also show me how to add "pizzazz and cool visual effects" (from VU Meta Tags Course Syllabus).

Our first assignment was to create opening Meta Tags for one of our sites. I created them for my recipes site and this is what my beginning set looks like.

These tags are set in order for search engines and spiders to drive traffic to your site. In order to display this I had to return to Lesson 3 of my Beginning HTML Notebook. In there we learned how to set the opening and closing tags so that they are displayed on the page. You use < before the opening tag and > after the closing tag. To see the code for the tag right click your mouse and hit view source. With Meta Tags it is necessary to shut off the word wrap so you will have to scroll over to read the tags listing.

(NOTE: September 5, 2001-I found out tonight that it is confusing on several browsers to put more than 1 revision tag within the Meta Tags so I took the extra one out. I could put a Meta Tag note in there about revisions but it just doesn't seem worth it just to keep a record, especially when I am constantly updating both sites.)

The second part of our assignment was to check two pages posted by our classmates for proper Meta Tag coding. With this I realized that there are a wealth of ways to code Meta Tags and I think it is determined by what you want the search engines to find.

Although I really have loved all of the sites posted and had the opportunity to see a wonderful variety of sites, I have to admit that I am a bit intimidated by how advanced they seem to be compared to mine. Hopefully I will grow enough to match this sometimes advanced group.
